Why Harry didn’t wear a military uniform to Queen’s funeral

Prince Harry’s military uniform – or lack thereof – has been in the news since the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, and questions continued as he attended her funeral today in morning costume .
Although he was permitted by his father, King Charles III, to wear his Blues and Royals No. 1 uniform for a wake for Queen Elizabeth’s eight grandchildren held over the weekend, the The 38-year-old arrived at Westminster Hall this morning in a black suit jacket and gray pinstripe trousers.
Adding his various medals to the jacket, the Duke of Sussex took part in the procession to and from Westminster Abbey for his grandmother’s funeral alongside Prince William, who was wearing his Royal Air Force uniform.
Harry – who was stripped of his military titles when he left his post as an active member of the royal family in 2020 – was not the only member of the family to dress in morning suit instead of his uniform military; Prince Andrew was not given permission neither do you wear formal dress at today’s service.
While the prince was originally supposed to wear a suit for all official events honoring Queen Elizabeth, he received last-minute permission from King Charles to wear the Blues and Royals military uniform for the vigil.
Previously, the palace had announced that these uniforms would only be worn at funerals by active members of the royal family who hold a military rank – and since the Duke of Sussex and Prince Andrew have left royal life, neither falls under the this category.

Prince Harry “was just ready to wear whatever his grandmother planned,” a source told Page Six last week. “He’s focused on his honor and that’s it.”
Indeed, the duke released a statement saying: “Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex will wear a morning suit at events in honor of his grandmother. His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears and we respectfully request that the focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – who have been in the UK since early September following previously scheduled engagements – were seated second row for today’s service, behind King and Queen consort Camilla.
For the funeral, the Duchess paid a moving tribute by sporting the pearl earrings the Queen gave her in 2018.
The couple walked down the aisle behind Queen Elizabeth’s coffin at the end of the service, with Harry joining his male family members for a procession through the streets of London before his grandmother was taken to Windsor Castle for his funeral later that day.
