Why didn’t Princes Harry and Andrew wear military uniform at the Queen’s funeral?
Wednesday, January 8, 2020 Mark a turning point in the recent history of british monarchy. It was on that day that the prince Harry decided, with his wife Meghan Marklegive up his life and work within the royal family. A decision that also had economic and personal consequences.
On the one hand, Harry was stripped of his noble titles and military functions in British royalty. Similarly, he also assumed the fact that he would stop receiving public funds. His titles included Captain General of the Royal Marinesand he even completed two frontline tours in Afghanistan. Although he has forgiven his royal and military duties, he still holds the title of Duke of Sussex after reaching an agreement with Buckingham Palace.
It means it is not allowed wearing the uniform in official acts, unlike his older brother William. With one of Charles’s sons in uniform but not the other was a topic of discussion at the funeral of the siblings’ grandmother, Elizabeth II, although Harry was allowed to join other members more young royals, including her brother, to hold the vigil while the Queen was in state over the weekend. Harry appeared in military uniform for the occasion but without the initials Emergency room on his shoulder pads. The Emergency room initials are traditionally worn only by those who ‘on duty’ of the monarch. He draws attention to Harry who spent a decade of military service under his belt.
A similar ban is in place for Prince Andrew, brother of Charles III but for very different reasons. In January this year, Andrew was stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages with his mother’s approval, after being linked to the Jeffrey Epstein sex scandal. Prince Andrew was not permitted to wear military uniform at the funeral of his father, the Duke of Edinburgh, despite serving in the Royal Air Force during the Falklands War.

Only members of the royal family are allowed to wear costumes

Regarding the coffin procession of Queen Elizabeth II, the five formal acts funeral of Queen Elizabeth II are: the religious service in St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, which took place last Monday, the procession of the coffin to Westminster Hall which took place on Wednesday, the vigil on the recumbent Queen – State, the funeral at Westminster Abbey and the funeral service at Windsor.
