NEW DELHI: Rejecting reports of a possible military alliance between Moscow and Beijing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow was interested in inclusive cooperation and deemed the military alliance “counterproductive”.
“No, we have fixed this in our bilateral relations adopted at the highest level during the Russia-China summit where we said that our relations are the highest in history but these relations do not pursue the objective of establishing a military alliance, ”Lavrov said at a press briefing.
Lavrov added that he had heard of a similar pro-military alliance being promoted in the Middle East and Asia.
“By the way, we have heard speculation about a pro-military alliance not only regarding the relations between Russia and China, but we have also heard of such an allegedly promoted Middle East-NATO alliance, we have also heard talk about Asia-NATO. ”
Joining India’s position on the issue of military alliance, the Russian Foreign Minister added that “Our Indian friends have the same position as us. We believe that this (military alliance) is counterproductive. and we are interested in inclusive cooperation that is for something and not against something. ”
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, along with his Russian counterpart, assessed economic cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow “positively” and noted new opportunities in the Russian Far East during a discussion on Tuesday.
During a press briefing with Lavrov, Jaishankar said they both spoke about connectivity, including the North-South International Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok Sea Corridor.
Earlier today, Lavrov, who is on a two-day visit to India, held delegation-level talks with Jaishankar.
