Heidi Shyu establishes Strategic Options Working Group under Defense Science Board

Heidi ShyuUndersecretary for Research and Engineering at the Department of Defense and a Wash100 Price 2022 winner, announced formation of a new working group within the Defense Science Board to help identify weapons systems and operational concepts as part of efforts to regain operational superiority for the U.S. military.
The Strategic Options Working Group will focus on several areas, including advanced submarine assets and operational concepts, the use of cyber weapons, the development of new countermeasures for electronic warfare, and new uses of space systems, Shyu said in a note released Tuesday.
“Additional considerations should include the adversary’s use of countermeasures to undermine U.S. dominance in the air, space, maritime, and cyber domains,” the memo reads.
The task force will present its findings and recommendations to the DSB for discussion and deliberation at a public meeting.
Shyu said she will sponsor the task force, which will begin the study period within 30 days of the initial appointment of its members and will have access to DOD officials and data to support its activities.
“Under no circumstances will the duration of the task force exceed 24 months from the start date,” the memo reads.
